The Citations 2016 - 2017

Our members come from departments across the graduate and professional schools. This year, we represent the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Medicine, the Law School, and the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs. We pride ourselves on our diverse range of backgrounds, interests, and cultures, which makes for a very close and relaxed group!

Paul Fanto

Paul is a Ph.D. student in physics.  When not writing equations or singing with the Citations, he can usually be found running around East Rock or at the tables down at GPSCY.

Lea Kiefer
Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry

Lea is an international student from Mannheim, Germany. She is currently in the second year of her PhD in the department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry.

Jessica Laird
Law School

Jessica is a first year at the law school and a Southern California native. When she isn’t trying to figure out how many jackets to wear, she is watching her Seinfeld DVD collection or buying Hillary swag online. You can find her in the law library or in the law library.

Ryan Handoko
Medical School

Ryan is a first-year medical student from Claremont, California. He loves eating new and weird foods, dumpster diving, infectious diseases, exploring the great outdoors, museums, and playing board games. In his natural state, Ryan can be found scavenging free food at Yale.

Ilana Usiskin
Medical School

Ilana is a first year medical student from Mendham, New Jersey. When not singing or learning about diseases, she spends her time running, finding hammocks on campus, and dreaming about travel. While an undergraduate student at Yale, Ilana sang with the a cappella group Proof of the Pudding.

Olivia Justynski
Biological and Biomedical Sciences

Olivia is a first-year PhD student in the MCGD track of the BBS department. She likes reading, dogs, musicals, and campy, low-budget science fiction.

Ellen Chapin
Global Affairs

Ellen Chapin is a first year at Yale’s Jackson Institute, working towards a Master’s degree in Global Affairs. A native of the Washington, D.C. area, Ellen is (unsurprisingly) a political junkie and Leslie Knope admirer. In between readings on post-Arab Spring Africa, Ellen prides herself on appreciation of the finer things in life–Broadway, Diet Coke, and pajamas. She is thrilled to be singing again, especially with the Citations!

Joon Lee

Joon is a first-year graduate student in the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program. A transplant from Los Angeles, he wonders if he will ever get used to living on the other side of the country, but looks forward to actually experiencing (some of) the seasons. When not singing or sciencing, Joon enjoys trying new food, playing board and video games, and listening to podcasts.

Caitlin Parmer
Medical School

Caitlin is a second year medical student from San Diego, California. After living on the East Coast for six years, she has finally realized what this winter thing is. In her free time, she enjoys sitting near heaters and wearing coats. When not cowering from the cold, Caitlin loves to play volleyball and squash. Caitlin previously sang with the Yale a capella groups Proof of the Pudding and Whim ‘n Rhythm!

Daniel DeRosha

Dan is currently in the fourth year of his PhD in Inorganic Chemistry.

David McIntosh

David is the Assistant Director of Educational Travel at Yale Educational Travel.

Haya Jamali

Haya is a 5th year graduate student in the Chemistry department, and comes from the beautiful state of Washington. She can often be found blasting Taylor Swift in the car or participating in other people’s hobbies. Haya’s favorite things include desserts of any kind, YOLOing, and sarcasm.

Jacob Siegel

Jacob is a fifth year MD student. When he isn’t singing with the Citations, he can usually be found wandering the streets of New Haven playing his ukulele and talking to strangers!

James Williams
Applied Mathematics

James is a fourth year PhD student in Applied Mathematics, and he is currently mastering network science and data analytics at YINS and at ESPN. When he is not coding, he enjoys spending time with his wife Laura and his boy Stanley, born last Fall 2015! James speaks loudly and quickly, coming from New Zealand, but makes up for it with deep bass resonance. And if you see anyone walking around wearing shorts in January, chances are his name is James!

Laura Williams

Laura is all the way from across the Pacific Ocean… from New Zealand! She is married to James Williams (the red haired one) and has just moved to America this year. She is currently studying Child Development and Care via correspondence, and trying to make the most of her time at Yale. Laura’s interests include singing soprano, sewing and spending as much time as possible with her husband and friends!
